- GO Competition & Grid Optimization:
- The GO Competition, managed by DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA‑E) is a series of challenges to develop software management solutions for challenging power grid problems. The competition’s intent is to create a more reliable, resilient and secure American electricity grid.

- Network Topology Optimization:
- Network Topology Optimization (NTO), also known in more restricted form as Optimal Transmission Switching (OTS), addresses network topology reconfiguration to achieve a “better” grid operating point, with the quality of the operating point judged by both cost and reliability criteria. Normally, in power system operation, the topology of the network is assumed fixed over short time horizons (e.g. less than one hour). However, changing the topology can help the network to operate at a lower cost or at better operating point with safer stability margins, using available infrastructure. However, the system operator has the authority to change power system topology by switching actions and such actions are used in practice to improve voltage profiles, increase transfer capacity or system reliability. The term NTO encompasses both transmission line switching and bus-bar switching while OTS only focuses on the more restrictive case of transmission line switching.

Sogol Babaeinejadsarookolaee
Sogol received her B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from IKIU, Iran and her M.Sc in Electrical Engineering from UW-Madison in 2019. Currently, she is a PhD student co-advised by professor DeMarco and professor Lesieutre in the ECE department at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research is on node-breaker modeling of power system to address challenging problems such as optimal switching in power systems.
